Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Sprawling shrubs.

Stems: Bark reddish brown, striate, stems 4–25 dm long, branched, often with numerous short lateral branches, young ones rusty tomentose, soon glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, well-spaced to closely spaced and somewhat imbricate, sometimes those of young or lateral branches ternate. Blades broadly elliptic–ovate to narrowly or broadly elliptic or elliptic–lanceolate, (22–)25–90 mm long, (8–)10–45 mm wide. Apex abruptly acuminate to attenuate. Base broadly cuneate to attenuate. Surfaces sparsely pilose when young, soon glabrate; blades thin, coriaceous. Margins entire. Veins usually conspicuous and slightly raised on lower surface. Petioles 4–10 mm long, ± brown pilose, soon glabrate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers solitary in the axils of sometimes reduced leaves. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, 5–8-merous, pedicels 12–37 mm long, elongating to 20–45 mm long in fruit, ± rusty pilose, bracteate, bracteoles absent. Calyx of 5 sepals; Calyx lobes broadly ovate to lanceolate, 4–8(–9) mm long. Corolla reddish purple to burgundy, the veins darker, campanulate, 10–20 mm long, the lobes obovate to narrowly obovate, imbricate. Stamens as many as and opposite the corolla lobes; filaments connate ca. ⅓–½ their length, adnate to corolla tube; anthers dithecal. Ovary superior, 1-celled; ovule placentation free-central; style 1.

Fruit: Capsules broadly ovoid to subglobose; 8–9 mm long; regularly dehiscent. Seeds numerous; nearly black; irregularly shaped; 1–1.7 mm long; margins slightly winged; seed coat crustaceous.

Ploidy: 2n = 72

Habitat: Open sites in mesic to wet forest.

Elevation Range: 610–1,500 m.

PROPAGATION/CULTIVATION

  • The fruit of Lysimachia hillebrandii is a roundish capsule about 3/8 inch in diameter. The capsule opens to release the seeds when it is mature. The seeds are almost black and very small.
  • Lilleeng-Rosenberger obtained 86% germination from seeds of a closely related species, Lysimachia glutinosa. These results were obtained with fresh seed sown on the surface of the potting medium. It took over 5 months for these seeds to germinate. (Lilleeng-Rosenberger 1996; Wagner 1990)
  • Ragone reported that NTBG had very little success growing a related species, Lysimachia lydgatei, from cuttings. Five cuttings were treated with Rootone F and stuck in a well-drained, moist medium; only 1 cutting rooted.
